The Immersive tunnel

Immersiver Tunnel

Experience Hamburg – History and Harbor Vibes Up Close

A dedicated area at Port des Lumières focuses on Hamburg and part of its history. When you go upstairs, on the left you’ll find the “History of the Port of Hamburg” section: here, information panels and digital animations show how the port developed from a medieval trading post into one of Europe’s most important seaports. You’ll learn which goods were handled, how ships were loaded and unloaded, and the role the port played in the lives of the city’s people.

Immersive Tunnel

On the right, the immersive tunnel leads you into another dimension – a sensory approach to Hamburg’s maritime atmosphere. Here, you can smell the salty sea air and feel the typical harbor wind on your skin. Wooden planks and riveted steel walls, combined with artfully placed indirect lighting, evoke the interior of a ship. Through portholes, you can glimpse the panoramic view of the harbor.

Hamburg Harbor

The tunnel connects the historic harbor area with the impressive viewing platform shaped like a ship’s bow. Here, inside and outside worlds merge: reflections, materials, and lighting effects make you feel as if you are standing right in the harbor – even while inside Port des Lumières. This creates a true sense of Hamburg not only around the building but also on the upper level of our hall – visually, sensually, and historically.
