A bit of history

The history of the port of Hamburg dates to the Middle Ages. Founded in 1189 with direct access to the North Sea, it quickly became a major commercial crossroads in Europe. Trade routes stretched from Scandinavia to the Mediterranean, turning Hamburg into a key economic hub.

With the creation of the Admiralty in 1623, Hamburg strengthened its strategic role. Tasked with protecting merchant ships from pirate attacks, as well as building, equipping, and maintaining the city’s vessels, it supported the growth of maritime trade and reinforced Hamburg’s position along Europe’s major trade routes.

Hamburg experienced exceptional growth thanks to the expansion of international trade and goods coming from the colonies. The city became one of Europe’s leading commercial centers, driven by the rise of maritime commerce.

From the mid-19th century onward, Hamburg’s shipping companies developed transatlantic connections, particularly during the large wave of German emigration to Brazil.

During the Second World War, Hamburg was heavily bombed. Much of the city and port were destroyed. After the war, the city was rapidly rebuilt and became an important hub for all states in northern Germany.

In the early 2000s, Hamburg launched a major urban development project. HafenCity became one of the largest redevelopment projects in Europe, combining contemporary architecture, culture, and new uses around the historic port.

Culturespaces opened the Port des Lumières in the heart of the Überseequartier. This immersive center is integrated into the city’s maritime identity: ship-inspired architecture, a wave-like facade, and immersion into the city’s port history. Designed as a spectacular experience, it extends the transformation of HafenCity and places Hamburg within the international network of immersive centers.
